Create an Upload File(s) Assignment

Q.

I need to have my students upload files for a grade; how do I do that? Can I use the Assignment like a dropbox? Will the assignment activity let students add files and I can give them back with my corrections?

A.

The Assignment activity module allows teachers to collect work from students, review it, grade it, and provide feedback. Students can upload multiple files and type notes alongside their submissions. Teachers can return a file as feedback.

1. In the upper right-hand corner, click Turn Editing On.

2. Select the module in which you want to add the assignment, and click Add an Activity or Resource.

3. In the pop-up window, select Assignment in the left column and click Add.

4. You will now see a screen which allows you to customize the name, description, availability, submission, feedback, and accessibility of the assignment.

For Availability:

  • Due Date specifies the date and time the assignment should be submitted by. Students may continue to submit assignments after this time, but they will be marked as late.
  • To set a date after which submissions will not be accepted at all, click Enable next to the Cut-off Date and set the date on or after the Due Date.

For Submission:

  • You can select Online Text, for which students type directly into an editor field and submit it, File Submissions, for which students upload one or more files as their submission, or both.
  • For a typical paper, 2MB is an appropriate setting for the Maximum Submission Size.

For Feedback:

  • Feedback Comments allows you to comment on TLEARN to provide feedback.
  • Feedback Files allows you to upload files with commentary.
  • Offline Grading Worksheet allows you to download the students' grades in a worksheet

5. After you have adjusted the settings, click Save and Display or Save and Return to Course. If edits need to be made, go to your Courses home page, find the Assignment, and click Edit -> Edit Settings.

  1. Is there a way to make the files that students have uploaded visible (read-only) to everyone in the class?
